Wine Pairings for Each Type of Pizza

As the go-to meal for any given reason (or none at all, for that matter), pizza manages to satisfy all hungry bellies. Now, for those looking to class up their pizza by putting down the PBR as a drink choice for a more epicurean experience, you ought to consider stocking up on various wines that pair well with different types of pizza. Before placing an order tonight, swing by a wine shop and pick up a few bottles that take your pizza night to the next level.

Cheese Pizza — Classic cheese deserves a simple, fruity red wine such as a Pinot Noir.

Margherita Pizza — Keep your wine nice and light with wines like Pinot Grigio or Rose. Margherita pizza has so much flavor due to the basil, tomatoes, and mozzarella, and the last thing you want to do is overpower the pizza with a full-bodied red.

Pepperoni Pizza — Because pepperoni presents robust, spicy flavors all on its own, you need a wine that matches the taste. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Shiraz are all excellent candidates.

Salad/Veggie Pizza — Well lookit you being all healthy and getting your greens in on your pizza! For this combo, it’s recommended pairing goes with white wines like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Sausage Pizza –– Pizzas topped with thick bits of meat need a dose of hearty red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.

Chicken Pizza — Not gonna lie, I always found this pizza topping choice to be slightly odd. If I’m going to have a barnyard animal on my pie, it’s gotta be a pig. No question. In the spirit of diversitychicken pizza can go with either red or white with Pinot Noir or Chardonnay, respectively.

White Pizza — When done right, white pizza can actually taste pretty good. Due to the olive oil replacing tomato sauce, you want to keep it light with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, or Champagne.

Hawaiian Pizza — NO WINE FOR YOU! Seriously, Hawaiian pizza doesn’t deserve a wine pairing. Abominations don’t get wine. You might as well drink Boone’s Farm with this one, you uncultured swine.

Be still my pizza-loving heart! Here are all the best spots in Denver to grab a slice!
