Is your neighborhood a pleasant place to live? We have some tips to help make it even better!
Aspen was recently named a safe place to live, according to the newest Aspen Police Department statistics from 2017. So how can you make your city or town a safe and welcoming place to live? Start with your neighborhood!
Here are a few tips to help make your neighborhood safer:
Get to know your neighbors.
If you know your neighbors, you’ll have a better idea of what should and shouldn’t be happening on your street. It’s a good idea to have a phone list so that you can contact people in your neighborhood. Consider introducing yourself to newcomers and welcoming them with a plate of cookies! You could even host a summer block party or ice cream social!
Maintain a sense of privacy.
As the saying goes, good fences make good neighbors. By closing your blinds or curtains at night, you maintain your family’s privacy. While it’s good to know your neighbors, you don’t want to share everything. Also, it’s a good idea to do this because it prevents unwanted people from seeing what valuables you have inside your home.
Lights and locks keep the bad guys at bay.
To reduce the temptation of illicit behavior, it’s important that everyone on your street keep their porch lights on. A well-lit community is less appealing to thieves and should deter them from breaking into your house. If there are street lights out, report them to the city so they can be fixed or replaced. Also, encourage your neighbors to keep their garage doors closed, even when they’re home.
Take care of your yard.
Taking care of your lawn, planting flowers, and keeping your house looking fresh has been known to deter crime. Offer to help any neighbor that is too busy to spend time in the yard, and as a bonus, you’ll get to know that neighbor fairly well, too!
